Schumann’s Das Paradies und die Peri (Paradise & the Peril) is a verse epic of Lalla Rookh, by the Irish poet Thomas Moore, was one of the literary sensations of the early 19th century.

Published in 1817, it earned Moore a headline-making Åí3,000 (for a modern equivalent, think J K Rowling) and was quickly translated into all the major European languages.
